The Anthology
For those of us who choose the publishing stream in Sheridan College’s Honours Bachelor of Creative Writing & Publishing program, we are asked to put the knowledge and skills we’ve gained into practice through the process of publishing something. While envisioning what this might mean, we considered numerous, innovative forms but ultimately decided on one that is near and dear to all our hearts: the physical book. We wanted to create something that we could hold in our own two hands as evidence of our time and efforts and thus, this anthology was born.
As we have found ourselves considering how we’ve evolved during our time here—as publishing professionals and perhaps more importantly, as people—these themes of growth and introspection were something that we wished to see reflected in the anthology’s contents, and so our request to the writers was to select works that were representative of their time in this program in some way.
Inscape is defined as "the essential quality of a thing, place, person, etc., especially as expressed in an artistic work" (Collins Dictionary). It seemed a fitting title given the rich variety in craft and style of writing within our cohort, but also our shared passion and dedication to this industry. It is these essential qualities that we will bring to any and all future projects and endeavours we pursue, whether it be as a writer, editor, publisher, agent, or something else entirely.
With that said, we are excited for you to witness the talent of each and every individual in this year’s graduating class. As you browse through the poetry, prose, and scripts within the pages of this anthology, we hope you find something worth your consideration long after you’ve closed the book—something that you might carry with you into your life just as we will carry the experiences we’ve gained throughout this program into ours. We hope in reading this anthology, you will find something essential.
